Have the conversation. Hear him out and see where he is coming from. If he feels you two should ends things as well, then agree and let it be a mutual break up. If he wants to try and save the relationshup, but your still not feeling it...well I'm sure you know what to do lol.

Who ends it matters little. You don't sound happy, so as long as it ends that is good
Why can't it be considered a mutual decision?
If you both want the same thing, decide to end it together.

Why do you want to be the one to end it? As long as its over, who cares? Its not like him dumping you will hurt your feelings

If he ends it tell him you were thinking the same thing for long while, and tell him you're glad to end it on friendly terms.

He might be fixing to propose

Why worry. You get the chance to play the victim and he will be none the wiser

The thing is ... I feel like him dumping me is really bad for my self-esteem. I want to end the relationship because it's lacking passion ... him ending it will (in my irrational mind) confirm that he's not attracted to me.

Tell him you need to see him immediately. Then tell him in a few clear words that it's over. Let him respond with whatever he has to say. Then day "Goodbye."
So? What happened with the talk?

It would be good if you could think of it in terms of the chemistry not being right instead of it being about you personally. If not, dump his ass first.
