does he like me?

there is a boy in my class. he's very popular, he's very open, he's very confident, he speaks to a lot of girls. however, when he's around me he gets very shy, he fidgets, bounces his leg, goes on his phone. he never talks to me. i catch him staring at me sometimes. when i catch his eye he looks away. we always make eye contact. he added me on social media. my best friend got rejected by him ages ago and now they dont talk, and this prevents me from talking to him (my bsf would hate if she saw me with him) so i guess that makes things a little awkward between us. one of my teachers keeps pairing me up with him in lessons eventhough she doesnt do that for anyone else, and always smiles at us weirdly when we're togther. when hes working in groups with other people he always contributes and engages in the work very confidently. however, when hes with me, hes silent and doesnt say a word. what does this mean? (i rlly like him btw, i just dk if he feels the same abt me)
