What Women Have Taught Me About Love

One of the earliest lessons I learned while offering support in a past relationship was that my partner didn’t always want me to fix her problems. Sometimes, she just wanted me to listen, be on her side, and occasionally say, “That bitch.”

That taught me that I don’t always have to be right. Sometimes, it doesn’t even matter who is right. Simply being there to offer support is enough. It also helped me understand that she was smart and more than capable of finding her own solutions, so supporting her didn’t have to mean fixing the problem for her.

I can relate to that because sometimes I purposely do things the hard way simply because I want to. Even if there are easier options, doing something my own way can give me a cathartic emotional release and a sense of control.

Another lesson came when I was in the military and my tech class was eating lunch together. One of the women talked about how a guy had given her flowers and how special it made her feel because no one had ever done that for her before. I will never know whether things worked out between them, but it stuck with me. It seems like common sense now, but I was young.

Years have passed since then, and after talking with many different people about love, romance, and relationships, I have started noticing certain patterns. One of the biggest is that many women want to feel heard, truly seen, validated, respected, and special. They want a partner who feels like a safe space where they can be themselves without being broken down or judged.

Feeling safe also goes far beyond protection from physical danger. I think if more men really tried to understand how women experience the world and the challenges they face, they might better understand what their partners need from them. Being someone your partner feels emotionally safe with can mean a great deal.

I could be wrong, and that is okay. These are simply thoughts and observations I have developed from listening to others and trying to understand what matters to them.
