How do you define a normal mother daughter relationship?
A so-called “normal” mother-daughter relationship as in typical or what’s expected, can vary as much as the individuals involved vary from other mothers and daughters.
However, I think it’s safe to say that mothers, who start out treating their infant daughters with care, affection and nurturing behavior and who meet their baby’s basic needs such as for food, clothing and shelter are laying a solid relationship foundation. As the daughter grows, mothers, will hopefully encourage their child, set appropriate limits/boundaries and help guide them in making healthy choices. Eventually, ideally, a grown woman and her Mom will have a friendship based on mutual respect, trust and love.
And, yes, there will be “fights”, because all relationships, no matter how healthy they are, have problems. But fighting is not necessarily bad. Sometimes people have to argue or have heated discussions. Frustrations can build up. The important thing is to know how to “fight” fairly. Books, videos or a few sessions with a counselor can help. If a solid foundation has been established, these upsets can be successfully navigated.
I have a very loving relationship with my mother. However, we certainly had our moments of anger and disappointments, especially when I was a teenager. But there was a good foundation, and, ultimately, we got through those difficult times.
