What we call "IQ" is the largest eigenvector of a high dimensional covariance matrix. Howard Gardner made strong arguments for eight independent dimensions of "intelligence" and there may be more. The largest eigenvector might represent 1/3 of the total observed variation, so ignoring the other components leaves out most of the "intelligence."
