Final end of a friendship?

Was friendly with a guy I knew from my late teens, never more than friends but used to hang out and enjoy time together

This went on for years but then 5 years ago he texted me asking why I had blanked him when he saw 'me' in a place I have never visited since when he ghosted me. I suppose I have a doppelganger somewhere?

I tried contacting him but never got a reply, I held on to some hope because we were mutual friends on Steam but now I see he has unfriended me there too

Not sure why this has affected me so badly (it's been years after all)

Not necessarily asking for advice, just wanted to vent

My best friend and I became friends in early high school. Our friendship lasted after that for about 8 years after high school. I got married and we were all friends. Then he got serious with someone and he eventually married. His wife, for some reason, never liked me. So he broke off our friendship. We still live about 15 miles from each other but we haven't spoken in like 40 years now. It's sad because when we were friends we were like brothers. In fact, when people saw us together, they assumed we actually were brothers.
I guess everything happens for a reason.
