Harping on people, bashing their partner, and talking them down, are some of the worst things you can do when someone is in a bad situation. Those words alway have the opposite effect. Just be there, keep communication open, listen, encourage, and build their self esteem to the point they realize how much more they are worth and how much more they deserve, than the emotional and physical abuse they are currently experiencing.
