I can only speak from my own experience so here goes....
I spent many years in the military, so I have had more than my fair share of long-distance (LD) relationships. Unfortunately, most LD relationships don't last.
But, I did have one that was kind of special...... we had been dating for about a year and a half when I was posted halfway around the World. She didn't want to leave her country (extremely close to her folks) so we promised to keep in touch, which we did (in the days before cel phones) through mailing cassettes back and forth. Eventually, I got posted back to her country and when she picked me up at the airport it was as if we had never parted. And yes, eventually we did talk about marriage but after much discussion I knew it wasn't going to be in the cards for us. She had been adopted as a baby from yet another country and as long as her mom and dad were still alive, I knew that she would never leave her country.... and I was very acceptive of her decision. And so, after several more years of dating, I again got posted a World away and although we stayed in touch .... eventually we grew apart and both of us moved on.
