A season of loneliness were there is ill health, kids to deal with, overtime, or things life throws at you meaning the alone time doesn't exist for that season, makes sense.
It's something that can be restored with changing circumstances.

But, the kind of sad, lonely ,existence that lasts day after day, year after year, with no effort to restore the relationship is the worst kind of loneliness.
Like the lyrics above say you become always lonely even in their company.
You try to hang on becoming addicted to the sadness and try to convince yourself things will change.
