Polyamory and open relationships

I know it's not the social norm but why is it so far fetched to people that some couples operate well in these types of relationships? I've been both open and poly for years and we love each other and are committed to each other just the same.....

I'm also bi so it's not a guy other than my long-term boyfriend usually. It really depends on what mood everyone is in.
