@Fifidog some people try to defuse a bad situation with dry humor. He might have been trying to do that with your mom's migraine. Whenever I did or said something wrong, I usually got my ex's wife glare. Maybe try something like that.

@SW-User Much better, and if he cant read it then I doubt his maturity. First of all why both of you got your own place at least he has his own place?

He probably just didn't want to be a third wheel and felt like he was in the way. He also is probably trying to avoid any codepency or coming across as needy, both of which are bad.

@Fifidog I'm sure he understands. You need to take care of your mom, so he opted to get out of the way rather than make things worse. He also probably isn't the greatest communicator, which explains why he said it the way he did.

Did your mother not say anything about it. If not maybe let it go this time, but I think he should have just went for a ride and not said anything.
