For me, it’s true in connotation, but not necessarily in DEnotation. I think there’s more assigning of reason, purpose and meaning to whatever one encounters, than what one may think is inherent.
People saying “everything happens for a reason,” puts me in mind of that famous Susan B. Anthony quote,
People will assign whatever reason best supports their own beliefs.
