Are women more emotional than men? Or is that just a stereotype?

It is my belief that women, in general, are more in touch with themselves and their emotions and not ashamed to show them. Men, in general, are more stoic and reserved in their emotions. They tend to hold them at arms length.
Not all women and men fit this description but from my experience many seem to fit this.
