egads,MAD was the bomb.actually I still read it regularly,though not as intensely...Monroe is heelarious,I dunno how they get away with it.Still love those little comix in the margins,movie spoofs(sometimes I will fake having seen the film and carry on a conversation all based on the parody...serves me well at boring tea parties)spy vs.spy,the fold ins don't blow my mind quite like they did when I was 12,but what a great concept.
the ones from the 50's were hypersurreal,pre-lsd but entirely lysergic,jam-packed full of biting critique of society and and and everything else!they have had some great inkslingers over the years.Oh my word,I saw Roger Kaputnik today at work!I'd better keep that one under my hat.
I used to say that my sense of humour was based on the 3M's-MAD,Monty Python and Marijuana...two outta three still work for me.I get the discarded ones from the puplic library where I volunteer(which is nice,cos I sure can't buy 'em)read 'em through,and then we send them to the troops in Afghanistan,where I'm told they are a big hit.I don't support the war,but luckily humor transcends politics,if I can help any stressed-out GI laugh a little,then I am making a difference somehow.
Once when I was in fourth grade we alla sudden had to move,like right now,tonight(I'm still not sure why)I didn't get to say good bye to my friends,but worse -my desk was chock full of lots of MAD magazines,most of my collection.!!!hope someone got to enjoy them...I told that story at an AA meeting recently to help illustrate my bizarre childhood-next week Pat gave me the latest issue and a big hug.awww(alcoholism is funnyfunny funny)Well luckily it's never too late to have a happy childhood,eh kiddies?
And also a few months ago I got a "Mad Grooves"cassette tape at a yard sale for a buck.Needless to say,I am superpsyched to have some MAD tunes in my mix.From rockabilly to disco-it's some good quality entertainment.Have a Mad day,EP.
