Does listening to an audiobook count as reading?

https://www.npr.org/2025/07/07/nx-s1-5454723/does-listening-to-an-audiobook-count-as-reading

I don't think the opinions of laymen count, the only people who do have to be informed, and when scientist studied it they found no significant difference provided you already know how to read.

So if you think it doesn't count, Go be wrong and play in traffic I don't care, your perspective on this one is warped and has nothing to do with reality and is just a Delusion.

The only opinions that have weight are those backed by empirical research.

Went out to eat today, where I go is a good distance from my place about 10 to 13 miles, so I decided to listen to Eighty Six and went through the Drive in order to eat in the car and Listen to Volume 6 Today got a good 50 minutes in and did my Grocery shopping, I think I'm going to bring the Xperia next time so that when I go shopping I can listen while I shop.

You know Eighty Six won the most prestigious light novel award in All of Japan, right? Grand prize too. First place.

Absolutely it counts...I do close work all day, so it's a break for my eyes...
of course it is reading! you double read when you listen AND are reading along. the only sad thing is there is no magical chime when it's time to turn the page like when we were children.

@AliceinWonderland look forward to bringing my Xperia next time to do my Grocery shopping while listening, A brand-new habit that will make the deadening experience of going to the Grocery a lot more enjoyable. I imagine the other customers will notice too since I'm always in such a rush to just get through it and get out of there. Listening to a Good book while I shop will give me reason to actually slow down.

Why are you renaming how absorb material?

You can read “Gone with the Wind”, listen to the audiobook, watch it on tv or see it in a movie theater. Any form will convey Mitchell’s intent. Science has zero to do with that. You’re simply suggesting another means by which you enjoy absorbing material.

If listening is reading, then the opposite must be true as well.

Listening is reading, ergo reading is listening?

There’s no reason to rename the methodology by which you absorb material. That’s not defined by age.
I doubt it … that would be listening to an audio book .. the verb reading has a clear meaning …

Yes it does

@Jenny1234 pretty much only men over 50 disagree, and we all know how men over 50 can be. By then you're so set in your ways, god help an expert who's actually studied things and done experiments claiming to know better. I suppose I'll always be willing to second guess my own ideas, but that's because the bug for science caught on Early for me.

So watching a movie would count as “reading” too!
