Anyone ever read Flowers for Algernon?

As a teen, the original short story, which is the best, moved me. Someone told him to bulk it up into a novel, which has too many weak parts written in a hurry. I think that was done to help get the film made, which is OK but... A classic case of "Less is more."

Is that the one where they give an "intelligence serum" or something to a janitor and he gets smarter but he dies?
MissPriscillaPrim · 70-79, T
@FaylenMoonleaf: Not quite. "Charly" the DD janitor becomes exceptionally intelligent via a serum first tested on a mouse named Algernon, and in the course of being coached in social skills, the coach and Charles fall in love. Acter tasting romance, maturity and celebrity, the mental effect tragically proves temporary, and at the end, Charly alone is blissfully forgetful of the heartbreak all around him, save for one painful temporary, accidental encounter with the coach. Ending: Charly asks if he can put flowers on the mouse's grave.
A long long time ago.

Yes, quite some time ago.
Yes. A very long time ago, probably close to the time the movie "Charly" came out.
