The Codex Gigas
The Codex Gigas, often called The Devil’s Bible, is the largest surviving medieval manuscript in the world. Created in the early 13th century, it contains the complete Latin Bible alongside medical texts, historical records, exorcisms, and magical formulas. Its most famous page is a full-page portrait of the Devil, which gave rise to the legend that the manuscript was completed in a single night with the Devil’s help. Fact and folklore is absolutely fascinating, making the Codex Gigas one my favourite historical book.
