author peter lovesey and peter diamond series

in diamond dust... shocking opening with peters wife being executed. then another detective's wife is also murdered. who could be so evil to go after the spouse??

I know I read some books by Lovesey years ago, but I can't remember what characters they featured. :( Might have been part of those 3-novels-in-1-volume Detective Book Club volumes.
