In the night
Night does things to people that they won't admit in the day. When it's dark, when they think nobody is watching, they become another version of themselves.
A man cries. Legally, without guilt, without feeling he should be strong. A woman looks at something she would hide deep in daylight. A person drinks or smokes or does things they won't admit to themselves.
Night is safety. Night is the place where the things a person won't allow themselves in daylight can happen. You're not at risk. Only night sees you. Night doesn't tell. Night won't remember you.
That's a lie they tell themselves. Night sees everything. Every tear, every move, every thing you take and put in your mouth. Night sees how you behave when you think you won't have to answer for it.
And then the person becomes who they really are. Not who they pretend to be in daylight. In daylight you perform. At night you feel. In daylight you wear a mask. At night you take it off.
The worst part is when a person goes back from night to day. They put the mask back on. They play the role. But they know the feeling from night. They know the thing they allowed themselves. And now they have to hide it.
Night isn't when everything changed. Night isn't the moment you were free. Night is when you put on the mask. And when day comes, you put it back.
People wait for night. They hunger for night. Because at night you don't have to pretend. At night you can behave how you want. At night you can afford to be.
But day comes. Always. And everything has to go back to normal. Back to the mask. Back to the lie you tell yourself.
That's night. It's not liberation. It's just the thing that lets you see who you really are. And then we take that thing away and hide it until the next night.Night does things to people that they won't admit in the day.
