Under the Volcano -- Malcolm Lowry

Now here's a big modern classic, I prefer these ones instead of the most well known ones, like Hemingway, this one is supposed to be pretty depressing, about alcoholism I think, and was made into a great film by John Huston, that I have yet to see all the way through. If you wanna see a great Huston that isn't The Maltese Falcon, I strongly recommend Wise Blood, based on the Flannery O'Connor story, who was such a great author I may have to try to fit her in in all the readings here, but for here let us focus on this singular tale ....
