Mimnermus and Solon
A neat little back and forth from Diogenes Laertius
Mimnermus saith:
To which an irate Solon said:
Mimnermus saith:
Happy's the man who 'scape disease and care,
and dies contented in his sixtieth year.
and dies contented in his sixtieth year.
To which an irate Solon said:
Be guided now by me, erase this verse,
Nor envy me if i'm more wise than you.
If you write thus, your wish would not be worse,
May I be eighty ere death lay me low.
Nor envy me if i'm more wise than you.
If you write thus, your wish would not be worse,
May I be eighty ere death lay me low.
