Escape from home
He was running away from the town where he had lived and loved for so many years. There could never be another such inspiration for happiness as theirs'. He gave in his notice and bade farewell to anyone who cared. The extreme south of Ireland was his target. Cared little for the weather forecast which was the worst for the entire island since records began. If necessary he'd sleep in his car, perhaps die in it. Without her nothing mattered.
The tornado force winds were certainly a revelation. Just as well nobody else had ventured out, with the steering impossible to control. Torrential rain; the screaming of the wind seemed made for his mood. hitting the car with loud thuds. Everywhere was blacked out; avoiding fallen trees was the most urgent concern. He found himself in a very beautiful coastal stretch. She, an artist , would have loved it. He had to stop for a while as he was blinded by tears - for two people so close for so long how had it come to this?. He'd been driving for hours when he spotted another car, almost looking crashed rather than parked. With difficulty he drove towards it on a headland. He often didn't know if if he was driving on tarmac or the sea but somehow got alongside it. There was a young woman in the driver seat but she didn't look conscious.
