A sampling of my reading diet

001 – In Search of Lost Time (Proust)

I’ve read the first volume Swann’s Way a number of times and had originally gotten to the 3rd volume, this time i’ll make it!!

002 – Boy’s Life (Robert McCammon)

Most of his stuff is free in the kindle and Kobo subscription services, i think he should be checked out by all lovers of horror and thrillers.

003 – The Story of the Stone (Cao Xueqin)

One of the great Chinese novels, in 4 volumes, also goes by the name Dream of the Red Chamber.

004 – The Ceremonies (T.E.D. Klein)

Slow burn, character development and atmosphere, totally different from Hell House by Richard Matheson, the last book i completed which was just so bam bam, with no build up.

005 – Human, All Too Human (Nietzsche)

The public domain translation. Since i don’t have a good eVersion of the Cambridge publication.

006 – Maxims (La Rochefoucauld)

Stunning aphorisms that pull no punches in a classy manner.

007 – Maxims (Chamfort)

Almost as good as La Rochey!!

008 – The Existence and Attributes of God (Charnock)

A classic Puritan text, LONG discourses, the 2nd almost 10 hours reading time, for me that is, and it’s a middle length discourse judging by the info given by the editor.

009 – The Journey to the West (Wu Cheng'en)

4 volume classic Chinese novel, lots of fun this one is, about a Monkey with superpowers. And for good measure there’s edifying Taoist material thrown in.

010 – Plato: Complete Works

I always meant to really sit down with Plato and his master Socrates, as readable philosophy, that can be enjoyed. Also reading the Oxford edition of Republic with notes by Robin Waterfield, who did such an amazing job with Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. PLUS i have the audiobook of Allan Bloom’s translation which some say is the best. I intend on having a smorgasborg of Plato before diving into Aristotle.

It should come as no surprise that i have many more books i’m reading, this is just a sampling, other books cover Stoicism, short horror story collections, some Delphi complete works of fellas like Sir Walter Scott and Anthony Trollope, plus Gothic novels, and the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, you get the idea, nothing exhaustive here, i feel i can only be exhaustive when i’m at least half way through everything included.

I am loving and needing my reading more than any other time in my life, domestic circumstances demand that i have a healthy form of escapism, reading that entertains and enlightens, stuff that has lasted, and resembling a lost world that will never be again. Things are like how they are now right before a fling with faith, if i get all preachy therefore, remind me brutally that i only like religious literature for a head knowledge and a perverse head knowledge at that purpose, and that i ought to know what authentic belief is like at least and that i will never exude an iota of that kind of authenticity ever.

I welcome all negative comments by the way, there are two kinds, (1) constructive, and (2) idiotic, the latter will be blocked without even blinking an eye. The former will be used to improve myself, mucho gracias for constructive negativity which may then be renamed positive for it’s proper use by me, ty, and have a good week y’all!!
