A Lady Lost.
I picked up A Lady Lost by Willa Cather in a charity shop. It's a 1923 novel by an American writer and tells the story of Marian Forrester and her husband Captain Daniel Forrester, who lived in the Western town of Sweet Water along the Transcontinental Railroad.
Throughout the story Marian, a weathy married socialite, is pursued by a variety of suitors and her social decline mirrors the end of the American frontier. This book had a significant influence on F. Scot Fitzgerald's 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby. I'll add it to my small collection of Virago Modern Classics to keep.
