I love military history books, and historical military novels.
I also like some historical romances - Helen Susan Swift springs to mind as a light, but often thoughtful read.
Autobiographies and biographies of military men, particularly the lesser known are fascinating, and exploration memoirs of the 19th century.
I am looking for some books on the early colonial era in north america- non fiction - including the immediate prelude to the Revolutionary War, from a social rather than political point of view. Political commentaries are often too biased to be taken seriously.

I am also a history nut. My current interest is Soviet Women in the front line during WW2 - it’s a fascinating topic 🙂

i am weirdly obsessed with alternate history stories

@chrisCA yeah.. one of my favorites is the "southern victory" series... where the confederates win the war over a very small incident.. a message that didnt get there in time. and the series is by now in the mid 20th century and you find historical figures like churchill or lenin in similar but different roles... and events like world wars still happen but play out with completely different alliances and results...

for example the south winning means the uk and france get closer to it for the cotton, but the north becomes an allie of germany...

@EvilEmily Interesting. I read an article that a victorious South might have been allied with Nazi Germany because of their racial policies.
EvilEmily · F
@chrisCA well its all speculation.. but it is reasonable that the north cuts all ties to the uk when they continue trading with the south. and germany always opposed slavery

Sci-fi with political elements atm

@helenS I can see that even looking back on the movie....although it wasn't front and centre.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@KiwiBird The movie took Heinlein's right-wing perspective and turned it on it's head, creating a satire of militarism.

William Vollmann's Seven Dreams series deals that early colonial era, they're historical fiction though, imaginative re-tellings.

@SW-User Thank you! Much obliged.

Romance is my least favorite. For several years now I have liked stories about survival, and some about war. I like many of the classic writers. I used to read a fair amount of books about science as well.

Overall, I do prefer reading non-fiction.

@SW-User Survival and the early explorers are very similar- and I read the classics in winter, in the long dark nights. Can't beat Dickens then!

My Dad loves Bernard Cornwell, I have read some of those, worth checking out if you like that (and haven't already!)
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@helsbels I loved his Sharpe series, but couldn't get into the series about Medieval Britain.
helsbels · 31-35, F
@ChipmunkErnie The Starbuck Chronicles is US civil war based and I liked his Hundred Years War books
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@helsbels I've only read the Sharpe series and a couple of the Saxon/Last Kingdom books. Unfortunately, the Saxon books I found so disappointing i never looked for any more of his work. :(

What’s your take on Catch 22?
Or the original MASH novel by Richard Hooker?
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@TAReturns I have never read the original Mash novel,
Catch 22 was immensely clever

Big Chief Elizabeth by Giles Milton. Interesting read.
