The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
One of the book that shaped and helped me going through rough days and signalled me to move forward.

I love reading. Books of almost all genre. That being said, between your questions and the replies, it looks like you are seeking to better yourself.
I don't know anything about you. It's possible that you are on the other side of my own life experience and all my suggestions are going to be a bad fit. That being said...
I have gained a lot of self awareness and perspective by reading books by authors who are from different cultures or backgrounds. Pachinko is about three generations of a Korean family living in post world war two Japan. Spoiler alert, it wasn't easy for them. If you want something a little more modern, White Fragility is, well, as you can probably guess, it's about racial inequalities.
If I've missed the mark and your were actually looking for fun fiction reads, correct me and I'll offer thoughts there too.

@RosaMarie I'm open to both fiction and nonfiction. I agree that it's important to read work by authors from all walks of life, but I've fallen somewhat short of that (and of reading in general) since I left university. I appreciate your recommendations.

When I entered medical school we were assigned a reading list, The Eleven Blue Men, by Berton Roueche changed my life forever.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I read it for philosophy class. It gave me a bit more focus about things, though I'll fall short of calling it a "self-help" book.

Be careful of reading books! Don't miss your own intelligence in storing the junks from books. You have to unlearn everything after reading.
