In the mini series “Identity Crisis” the justice League reveals the method they used when faced with that problem.
The villain Dr Light, attacks their satellite and injuries the Elongated Mans wife. Learning the Leagues secret identities, and vows to go after their families.
Using Green Lantern’s ring, Santana’s magic, and Wonder Woman’s lasso, they altered his memory and personality, making him into a joke supervillain.
Superman, is aware of this, but silently agrees to it for Lois’s safety.

They wouldn't have to. If people in Metropolis just went to the store and bought a Superman comic, they would find out!

Gotta be honest, if glasses were enough to fool his coworkers (who, if I recall, were journalists and reporters and thus have high perception), then I don't think the people of Metropolis were all that bright.
