Locke and Key

This is my favorite fictional story and there's a bunch of new material coming out for it at the moment. What I'm having trouble understanding is the show. Why did they choose to go for an overtly magical theme? It's more Hogwarts than Stephen King. I wouldn't flat out say it's bad, but to achieve that motif a lot about the original context and tone had to be abandoned. The villain in the show is also a lot more vain than the original incarnation. I understand changing something when moving to a new medium, but if what you change isn't as good or better than what was already there then why? A comic book is basically a storyboard anyway so like 70% of the work was already done. It's especially baffling because it's not like turning away from the darker tone of the books made it more accessible. Stranger Things was like the most popular show ever and it was more along the lines of what's seen in the Locke and Key books.
