It's always so weird looking through older childrens books

This is one that my grandma gave to me when I was little (that's been used a LOT since I'm the oldest of nine lol. Most of the stories in the book are from before the 1940s). As a child I didn't find it weird at all that the father was forcing his young daughter to sleep with the creepy boy frog but now I read it and am just like... "Why?" 馃槀

This is not just "before the '40s". It's one of the famous Grimm's fairytales, most of them, if not all, have their roots in medieval Europe. Which makes it "normal" to be creepy.

@SW-User the stories in this book mostly predate the 40s. They aren't all written by the same person or in the same time period. There are about ten-twelve in total, and I believe each one was taken from a different source.

@AmmieBell That's what I'm saying, that's way before the 40s.

@SW-User yes, but some were also written in the 30s lol. So right before the 40s. I wasn't going to go through and give a date to each story, so I settled on "before the 40s," as that's true for all of them. Be it hundreds of years before the 40s or five years before lol.

@AmmieBell Oh I get that. I was just talking about this specific fairytale as it really is a very disturbing one if you think about it.

@SW-User they are. Though Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel are both a bit higher up there for me lol.
SW-User
@AmmieBell Red Riding hood FOR SURE!!!!
I'm telling you, medieval Europe = sick place.
