It has more immediate appeal to the modern zeitgeist. The future died some time in the early 80s, when we lived an hour away from nuclear apocalypse at all times. That's when we went from crystal cities to Terminator hellscapes. There was a brief period of optimism in the 90s but 9/11 put an end to that and it's been grim going ever since. There isn't much optimism left in the world.
