He may be worried about certain things. He may simply be overthinking things which in turn could make him distance himself from you but because he likes you he does not want to be distant. He may just need reassurance or support. Let him know you are there for him.

I always keep a good distance from women. Safest that way. I'm quite open-hearted and caring, so I don't want that to get me into misunderstandings. If I really like someone, I'll think very, very long and hard before indicating it in any way at all. I'm sincere and serious about relationships, so don't like randomly starting and stopping one.
