Did common "Biblical names" exist before the Bible?

Everyone knows a Peter or David, but did those names actually exist before the Bible? Were they common then, or were they as common as, say, "Ethan" which is still a sort of common name but not one that inundates every room of people you're in. Or were they completely made up names, like how there was never anyone named Hermione before Harry Potter?
