I believe this also can apply to seeing aging take a toll on a loved one, whether an aging parent or a spouse with health problems. Age and declining health leave you grieving for the person they used to be even though they are still alive.

I don't agree. You know they are still alive, and usually well. That they will have a life beyond you. IT is much harder to see your children die before they get to live their life and be constantly reminded of everything you miss in their absence.
