Just over a week ago my best friend of over 40 years died of a heart attack. It was a shock to everyone and I am still processing this void in my life.

I was taking a hiatus from Facebook. When I came back I found my friend was messaging me. He wanted to talk to me. But by then he had a heart attack and died. I wasn't ignoring him. I was missing everyone. I'll never know what he wanted to talk to me about.

In the last 5 years….3 to suicide, 2 to cancer and 1 to cardiac arrest. And then my best friend, my dad, just before last Christmas.
NewRaven · 51-55, F
@JesseInTX I’m so sorry to hear about all your losses.

In the military, 15 in 45 minutes.
Civilian life, way too many.

I watched my friend Janice drown in a car. We couldn't get her seat belt undone, we tried and I stayed with her as long as I could before getting out. We run off a small bridge on the way back from the beach. still in our bikinis. She was 19.

😢😢😢
A young man moved to our tiny rural community ib Pennsylvania. He liked me, but he was four or five years older and my folks wouldn't let me date him.

i introduced him to my best friend and they were soon inseparable. She got pregnant, they moved in with his parents and soon I couldn't even get her on the phone.

One August morning, State Police came to our house to say she was missing. Did I know where she might go? I didn't.

My family and I joined the search party and we found her - still alive - in an abandoned barn. She wasn't talking, and they asked me to try. She was bruised, wearing an old overcoat, and stone-faced. She wouldn't talk to me either. Her parents said she wouldn't have anything to do with them.

Almost immediately, she had a baby boy and she vanished from the hospital.

A year and a half later, I got a letter from her.

She was living in Tempe, Arizona, had just finished a secretarial course and landed a job, had her own apartment. She was jubilant. She would write soon and explain everything.

Instead she was found hanging from a light fixture in her apartment.

I am as sure as I am of anything that he killed her.

@Mamapolo2016 Yes, something terrible happened through him. Obvious as day. How sad. She was too frightened to speak by the sound of it, desperate to start a new life without the chance of her husband finding her. You made an escape due to your parents, otherwise it could have been you.
@BalthazarBlake Yessir. My family would have come to rescue me if necessary. Hers didn't.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
Yes.
After many years of suffering she died of cancer
It was actually a doctor assisted suicide (so to speak)
There are certain parameters in which it’s legal to have this happen.
I lost six friends in the first few years of this century. They died from heart ailments, cancer, and one suicide. All under 60.

I lost two in Vietnam. The closest one was my next door neighbor. The summer after high school, he and some other friends had been at a party and were probably drunk. I don't remember who was driving, but they missed a curve and slammed into,a tree. All,3 died.

I had two very close friends of mine that grew up on my street, die before they graduated from high school. One from a car wreck and another as a result of drugs. I've lost many friends and coworkers since.

I lost friends and loved ones to war, auto accidents, suicide, and disease. It is the price we pay for having a long life.
Wiseacre · F
@bowman81 or a short one..
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
Yes it was in September 2001. I still miss her...she was a great friend that I met online and then we were friends in person.

They just grew apart, and I got tired of being there for them while they simply disappeared

Jumped off a bridge
A heart attack took one of my close friends in 2017.

It was relatively quiet until the pandemic struck. Then it seemed as though I was losing a friend every other month.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Yes. She had lots of health issues and died when she was in her 70's (she was about 10 years older than me). She had become friends with my wife as well, and it hit both of us pretty hard.

One dropped dead, no official cause of death, but he was doing steroids. Two were murdered. One died of cancer. One was hit by a car. One died doing too many benzoes trying to come down off speed.
Two suicides
One drug overdose
One congestive heart failure
One World Trade Center
One Pentagon
Three in Iraq

That’s since my twenties

I lost two of my best buddies a long time ago. And I still think about them. One was a mining accident and the other was a heart attack.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
The military, motorcycles, cars, and now that I am pushing 60, some are starting to fall to old age.
Couple of times, actually. Most times we just drift apart, but once in a while it's due to a fight.
Sapio · 46-50, M
I've lost four. Three were murdered and one lost his battle with leukemia.
MissingLink · 51-55, M
I've lost 1 to suicide, 1 to diabetes, 1 to COVID I'll miss them always
heavyone2 · 61-69, M
2 to accidents, one to an offshoot of parkinson's .....life can suck at times.
Friends are never lost. Instead, life's pages keep turning.
BalthazarBlake · 56-60, M
@Lyfis2live True enough.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Over the years, pretty much all of them.
BalthazarBlake · 56-60, M
@ChipmunkErnie One of the tragedies of old age, Chip.
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
A few. My two best were killed.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
