I guess the first thing is to figure out what kind of addiction. Then admitting it is an addiction. I would assume most times it cannot be "willed" away. Professional help may be needed. But finding out the trigger and trying to either avoid it or figure out a healthy way to deal with it may help

I wish I knew. I stopped cigars cold one day a little over a year ago. $50-$100 a week habit, just decided to say "NO" tossed them into the fireplace and haven't had on since. On the other side, I can't stop drinking
