Yes, you had to use your imagination. They would describe the action, with sound effects.
The closest thing in my lifetime used to be phone numbers you could call, 976 numbers, where someone would describe a romantic setting, with maybe the sounds of oceans waves or bells in the background, and narrate about an interlude. It was like a dollar a call.
Totally removed from the way things are now, of course.
You don’t have imagine anything now, it’s all there onscreen to be seen.
