Umberto Eco on socialmedia:

“Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community. Then they were quickly silenced, but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It’s the invasion of the idiots.”

Everyone is entitled to express their opinions. Doesn't mean you have to listen or take notice.

@Mikemcneil the problem is that many do... and by that they are polluting the minds of other idiots

That's always been the case though even before the Internet. How do you think Hitler got into power? Idiots are the silent majority. Now they're not as silent. Trump voters for a more recent example.... 😰 c

@Mikemcneil uhm... lets not go into to much detail with hitler and the effects of propaganda. but the situation isnt comparable with todays media where everyone can post on twitter and make your tube videos.

before that you had to have significant resources avaiable to make yor voice heard via newspapers or later tv

You still have to attract an audience somehow. There are plenty of YouTube channels with no viewers. Lowest common denominator stuff will always be popular.

@Mikemcneil true but there are many channels with a lot of viewers that publish an opinion so vile that it would never have been heard before
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
@LadyJedi but they can't force viewers to watch or take notice can they? Would you watch something vile just because it was on a channel you'd previously found interesting and enjoyable?
LadyJedi · 36-40, F
@Mikemcneil no.. but now they have that opportunity and get to think these opinions are legit... after all this somehwat famous guy on youtube says it too

I'm thinking the Logan brothers.
