I'd take issue with 'a society obsessed with public opinion'.
The only ones endlessly obsessed are probably teens and politicians.!
Leadership? Well. That tends to be defined by those who don't show any!
People will say that's what they want but if it isn't in front of them they're hardly likely to be the first to stand up and say 'follow me!'
And leadership isn't what I'd think of as a popular position.
If you lead you have to be prepared to go places and do things that those behind might well find difficult or uncomfortable.
And that rarely equates to popularity.
