About women, girls and "prettiness"…

@Captain Then that’s why the quote exists. Because it is sexist to place that obligation upon one gender and not the other.

@bijouxbroussard And thats why I can never be pretty, but maybe I can do and say the odd beautiful thing along the way. I think the idea is that prettiness is almost objectitying where as beauty and liveliness are things of action and words, thoghts and virtues, valuing the person as well as the aesthetic. And a beautiful woman is so much more than a pretty woman,

I'll give you a paraphrasing of a quote by "the great cricket commentator Brian Johnston" a man of beautiful words.. " The pretty woman is the one you cant help staring at across the room all night long, The charming one is the one who cant take her eyes off of you". Take away any predatory preconception some defensive minded might have reading the wrong intention into it, (considering Brian Johnstone was no looker and a humerous gentle chap !) and I think you have a respectful and beautiful sentiment. Like the song "and the eagle flies with the dove, and if you cant be with the one you love, honey love the one your with".

@Captain I actually liked what you said about "beauty" because that is different than prettiness—anyone is capable of it, if they can express love and kindness. It goes beyond the physical, and it’s not restricted to one gender.

@bijouxbroussard I like to think thats why I can have a valid view on the subject. Even if some find me attractive now, for a lot of my early life, I felt mor elike Quasimodo. I know what it is not to be pretty, and for anyone fed up of being "pretty" I say be careful what you wish for... It is odd how things change.

I would argue that we use the term beautiful for status symbols like a country estate or a sports car when really most of us oculd never afford to run them and they are expensive trinkets bought with the sole purpose of making themselves and others believe they are somehow more worthy and better. That sounds like looking pretty to me. I think beauty is in giving and shairng. Country estates and sports cars are just pretty dressings. I give you Pete Waterman as an example. Spedns his money on heritage railways works with disadvantges kids, and interesitng interviews because he can, but its all giving and life enrichng for all. If I won the Omaze house draw, I'd like to be genrous with my time and net worth in siilar ways so I get his vibe.
