Help finding a quote!

OK so you’ve heard the “don’t judge a book by its cover” but there’s an expansion I’ve heard that goes “but if it never opens up what good is it?” Or something along those lines. I might be paraphrasing it but it’s basically that. Do you know the exact quote or who said it? Everytime I google it it’s just shows me the first part, never the expansion.
Sometimes baby steps are a good thing. Maybe you have been searching for the right answer in the wrong places. Maybe you have to look it up on Wikipedia? Or Academic Papers online?
