What's it about?...

"They paint the world full of shadows, and tell their children to stay close to the light. Their light, their reasoning their judgments, because in the darkness, there be dragons...

But it isn't true. We can prove that it isn't true. In the dark, there is discovery, there is possibility, there is freedom in the dark once someone has illuminated it. And who has been so close to doing it as we are right now?"

It made such an impression on me when I came across it, and is so perfectly fitting with the situation. It makes me feel a sense empathy and hope for people who are long dead. Even if I know how the story ends.

Any guess Is welcome

Without any context in what it was said, I would say it is about being different. In a world that walks to the right, having the courage to venture to the left.

@SW-User I was wondering if I could give any context without giving away too much.

You're in the right lane for sure. It's a heartfelt statement spoken by a man at the end of his rope.
Having given much of his life to fight a system that is unbeatable, with a mindset that is unchangeable. That's his version of it anyway.

The version everyone else knows and hold as true, is that he and everyone like him Is a threat to civilization, and should be removed from the world.

Last remnant of the golden age of piracy btw:)

@Axelerator I can see why you feel the sense of empathy. I did too, when you explained. Although generally I had an idea what the quote was about, when you brought in the personal story of someone, it added an emotion too.

@SW-User I remember it made me slightly emotional when I first heard it.
The genuineness of his want, for him and his friends to be free from the world they came from. Trying to carve out their own little piece of the dark and fight for it.

The crushing disappointment as he realizes no matter what he does, it just won't be possible.

@Axelerator The hope, ebbing into hopelessness. It is so emotional to read because it is something most people if not all, can relate to.
