How true. Often we are already thinking ahead to our next response instead of actively engaging with the other person. It takes discipline to become a good listener.

Often, but equally important is not to be thinking what you are about to say when someone is talking - I don't know how one could ever manage knowing what's happening in a conversation without having it said and no preposition (assumption) happening about a person.
