I Love Weird Facts

The Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal is west of the Pacific entrance.

How the hell does that work?
I'm not being rhetorical, that's an honest to goodness question.
The Isthmus of Panama which separates the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans runs primarily east-west. When you enter the canal from the Atlantic you travel primarily south to reach the Pacific but you actually travel SSE. When you exit the canal into the Pacific Ocean you are mostly south of where you entered the canal, but also a little bit east. If you Google a map of the canal you will see what I'm talking about.
