The original site, Experience Project, was basically a support group. It was established for people with MS, then forums were added to discuss other issues, like bereavement, etc. It began in 2006 and lasted until 2016. I was told that a couple of former EP members established Similar Worlds as its replacement. Both were about sharing ideas and feelings, often about personal struggles.

Friendships and more can happen here, but it’s not a dating site. I’ve been on EP, and then SW since 2009 and the people I’ve seen joining with the express intention of finding a romantic partner are invariably disappointed.

Venting, being curious and asking opinions, and random social interactions.

Originally? - connecting people who are physically or socially disabled in some way.
Effectively? - as a responsibility free mental dump for dopamine addiction.
Rarely - as a place for people to genuinely connect
