@KiwiBird I was in Japan several times (business-related), and my Japanese friends told me they really encounter difficulties to distinguish the American-style "L" and "R", like in those old-school stereotypical (and maybe a bit racist) jokes ("stupid Amelicans"). It's because their own "R" is sort of between the English "R" and "L", and the American "R" is formed basically at the sides of the tongue, similar to the L.
