it kinda depends on the sort of candle; proper wax is normally either petroleum based or (in fancy cases bee's wax). tallow used to be more common as less expensive alternative to wax candles, but they're kind of a speciality thing these days mostly.

Given the sheer number of candles on the market today, it's dangerous to make sweeping generalisations and pretend that beeswax candles, soy wax candles and synthetic candles also don't exist... especially when beeswax and soy wax candles have been increasing in popularity recently.
