why is Pacific Ocean called Pacific?

The Pacific Ocean is called "Pacific" because Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who was the first to cross it in recorded history, found the waters remarkably calm after navigating rough seas, so he named it "Mar Pacífico" which means "peaceful sea" in Spanish; "pacific" meaning peaceful in English.

@cinsac wonder what he'd named it if he'd been caught in a tsunami or monsoon?
