Another reaction to the Queen's death

Yesterday, as I was driving, I turned on the car radio. Even here in the US, there was lots of coverage of what was happening in the UK.

A group of well wishers had gathered to see King Charles' arrival at Buckingham, and you could hear a group of women singing the National Anthem. The radio broadcast only carried a few seconds of that, but when I heard the words, "God save the King" I choked up.

That version had not been sung in 70 years, and although I had long been aware that the pronouns would change with the gender of the monarch, and although I have seen these words in print, this was the first time I had ever heard them.

It just seemed to punctuate the reality of the Queen's death for me.

I remember singing “God Save the Queen” in school. It will be so different to sing “God Save the King”.
