The Queen and I

I am American, but I have always felt a certain connection with Queen Elizabeth. Her reign corresponds to my lifetime.

Her father King George died on February 6, 1952. Elizabeth was out of the country and had to fly back, and on February 8 there was a public ceremony in which she officially ascended to the throne. (Not to be confused with her coronation ceremony, which was months later.) The other thing that happened on February 8, 1952, is that I was born.

So I have long realized that when she eventually passes away, it would feel very unsettling to me.

I recently did some web research, and I can say that in my lifetime thus far, there have been:

14 U.S. Presidents
13 Canadian Prime Ministers
9 U.N. Secretaries General
7 Popes

and....

1 British Monarch.

I do feel upset at knowing she is ill now, and I do hope she recovers.

I was hoping she'd recover, too. I'm pretty sure a lot Americans felt a fondness and admiration for this Queen Elizabeth of our lifetimes , even without that connection you shared with her.
There was already a pall over this day, for me. Now I know that it is and will be a very sad one for many, many others, as well. I already had a candle burning, for someone I loved more than anything in the world. 🕯️
