It would be rather more tragic if people were persuaded that they had a choice in choosing the person who ceremonially enacts laws he can't change.

The benefit of a constitutional monarch is it frankly doesn't matter. We can be patriotic and rally around a human being AND hate the people ruling us at the same time, because we don't choose the former and can complain like billi-o about the latter.
